On the 6th of March 2025, the European Parliament in Brussels will host the event “Ensuring Equal Political Participation for Female Youth Politicians in Italy and the EU: The Need to Standardise the Minimum Candidacy Age to 18”. Organised by our colleague Francesco Cautiero as part of the volunteer organisation EDUXO APS, the event follows months of preparation and advocates for better representation of young female politicians in national and European institutions.
The event will employ a non-formal education approach, combining plenary sessions with expert input from various fields (e.g., academia, policy, non-profits) and interactive working group activities. Working groups will engage participants in developing concrete recommendations for electoral reform, discussing the challenges young women face in politics, and culminating in final presentations and a networking session.
The event will be co-hosted by Benedetta Scuderi (Greens/EFA, Italy), Cristina Guarda (Greens/EFA, Italy), Kira Marie Peter-Hansen (Greens/EFA, Denmark), and Lena Schilling (Greens/EFA, Austria). The Greens/EFA Group of the European Parliament and the European Parliament have supported the organization of the event.
The event will bring together diverse voices from research, policy, non-profits, and politics, with a special emphasis on gender equality and youth participation. By comparing the Italian situation with positive examples from other member states (especially Denmark and Austria), where the youngest female MEPs have been elected (Kira Marie Peter-Hansen and Lena Schilling), the goal is to place this issue on the political agenda of the European Parliament for EU-wide electoral reform (long term), as well as on the agenda of the Italian Parliament to change the minimum candidacy age (short term).
